CPL stands for Chronic progressive lymphoedema and is a common chronic condition of the legs, especially in cold-blooded breeds such as Tinkers, Shires and Clydesdales. It is also considered a chronic inflammation of the pastern or hoof wall, often caused by poor hygiene, humid conditions, bacteria, fungi or other irritations.
Symptoms in horses:
- Thickening of the skin around the legs
- Skin folds and scabs
- Swollen lymphatic vessels (especially around the calf)
- Lameness or intermittent lameness
- Sensitivity when touching legs or pasterns
- Sometimes scabs or corns
- Often accompanied by mite infections
- Progressive exacerbation without proper care
Causes:
- Probably a genetic defect in the lymphatic system
- Often gets worse with insufficient exercise, poor hygiene or improper diet
- Poor stall and pasture hygiene or muddy conditions
Treatment and care:
- Thorough cleansing of the pastern
- Possibly antiseptic or medicinal ointments
- Improving stable and pasture hygiene
- Lymphatic drainage through massage and movement
- Mite control
- Sometimes supplementary supplements for skin, vessels and resistance
