Piroplasmosis

Piroplasmosis, also known as Babesiosis, is an infection of the blood caused by the parasite Babesia, which is transmitted by ticks. The parasite attacks red blood cells, which can lead to anaemia and reduced oxygenation of the body.

Symptoms in horses:

• Fever
• Reduced appetite and weight loss
• Weakness or lethargy
• Yellow mucous membranes due to anaemia
• Sometimes dark urine
• Less alert or active

Causes:

• Transmission by tick bites
• Possibly via blood transfusions or contaminated material

Treatment and care:
Treatment is always done in consultation with a vet and may include medication, supportive care and blood monitoring.
