Reduced mobility

Reduced mobility is common in horses and often manifests as difficulty starting up, shorter strides, less suppleness or restraint in movement. This can occur due to wear and tear, stiffness, muscle and connective tissue strain or the natural ageing process.

What happens when mobility is reduced?

When joints, muscles and connective tissues work less well together, the musculoskeletal system loses its resilience. Joint fluid decreases in quality, cartilage becomes less elastic and muscles recover more slowly after strain. As a result, movement becomes more difficult and the horse may lose comfort and freedom of movement.
