You see your horse eating dung and probably immediately think: Why is he doing thát?
Eating manure, also known as coprophagia, occurs in horses. In young foals, it can be part of normal exploratory behaviour. In adult horses, it can have various causes and it is wise to investigate a bit further.
Possible factors include, for example:
- insufficient roughage or fibre
- boredom or little opportunity to exhibit natural foraging behaviour
- stress or changes in the environment
- an unbalanced ration
- learned behaviour
Does an adult horse keep regularly eating dung? Then first take a critical look at forage, ration, housing and behaviour. If in doubt, a vet or nutritionist can help rule out any physical or nutritional causes.
