Piroplasmosis is a tick-borne infectious disease in horses. The main causative agents are Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. These parasites affect red blood cells and can therefore cause anaemia, among other things.
The disease mainly occurs in warmer areas where infected ticks are found. Horses can become quite ill, but the severity of the symptoms can vary.
Possible symptoms
- Fever
- Reduced appetite
- Lethargy and weakness
- Weight loss
- Pale or yellowish mucous membranes
- Dark-coloured urine
- Reduced performance
Not every horse shows the same symptoms. If piroplasmosis is suspected, examination by a vet is important.
Treatment and recovery
Piroplasmosis must be diagnosed and treated by a veterinary surgeon. Depending on the situation, in addition to specific medication, supportive care and monitoring of the blood count, among other things, may be necessary.
Even after treatment, a horse may need time to rebuild its condition and energy.
What can Unique B30 add?
