Insulin resistance is a metabolic disorder in which the body is less sensitive to insulin. As a result, the body produces more insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.
Not every horse with insulin resistance is overweight, but excess weight and localized fat deposits do occur regularly. Think, for example, of a hard or thick crest, fat at the base of the tail, or noticeable fat pads.
An important area of focus is the increased risk of laminitis. Therefore, it is wise to have your vet take a look if you suspect insulin resistance.
Signs to look out for
- Difficulty losing weight or gaining weight quickly
- A thick or hard mane
- Localised fat deposits
- Sensitive hooves or laminitis
- Reduced performance or energy levels may occur
Nutrition, exercise and pasture management form the basis for horses with insulin resistance. The diet must be tailored to the individual horse, and special attention should be paid to the amount of sugar and starch.
What can Unique CL20 add?
Unique CL20 Balance Booster is a daily, 100% sugar- and starch-free formula, developed for horses whose metabolism requires extra attention.
Unique CL20 supports:
- normal metabolism
- the natural hormone balance
- normal liver function
- the hoof health
The formula contains, amongst other things, milk thistle, Vitex agnus-castus, turmeric, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and grape extract.
CL20 does not replace a tailored ration, sufficient exercise or veterinary guidance, but can be used alongside these as a daily support.
With insulin resistance, it ultimately comes down to the whole picture: diet, exercise, pasture management, and continuing to keep a close eye on your horse.
