Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is a metabolic disorder in horses in which the insulin metabolism is impaired. EMS is common in horses with overweight or localized fat deposits, but even lean horses can develop EMS. A major risk factor is hoof inflammation (laminitis).
Early recognition, appropriate nutrition and good guidance by a veterinarian are essential to support the health and well-being of the horse.
What happens at EMS?
In horses with EMS, the body does not respond normally to insulin. This can lead to elevated insulin levels and a higher risk of hoof inflammation.

- Impaired insulin metabolism
- Obesity or localized fat deposits, although this does not always occur
- Increased sensitivity to sugar and starch-rich foods
- An increased risk of hoof inflammation
- The importance of an appropriate diet, weight management and controlled movement
